Capturing the “Other” Legacy

As I move through my mid-fifties, suddenly aware of time and my own depth of lived experience, I realize how much is lost when a person dies.

We spend enormous effort making sure our material legacy is properly passed on, but we can’t pass on what is in our heads and hearts unless we deliberately record it. And once someone is gone, the opportunity to say those things is gone too.

I don’t want you or the people you love to be left wishing that you had written even a letter saying the things you wanted them to know.

Via Meridian Editorial, I work with a small number of clients at a time to record the “other” legacy in whatever form is right for your needs and purpose.

A few ideas for you

There are many ways you can record the things you want to pass on. Some clients are ready to tell the full story of their life in a memoir. But you could start smaller. Here are a few ideas:

A collection of letters. Letters to a daughter, a son, grandchildren, a spouse, or the people who will lead the company after you.

A business wisdom collection. Decades of judgment on hiring, negotiation, and leadership, gathered for the people who will run things next.

Milestone letters. Written now, and meant to be opened at a wedding, a fortieth birthday, or whatever moment you want to be there for.

We start with a call to talk through the message you want to pass on and what form is right for it. From there, we agree on price, timeframe, and how the process will run. After that, the approach is straightforward: I conduct interviews and write, in close communication with you throughout.

Jane Mackay

Hi, I’m Jane Mackay.

For almost two decades, I’ve been editing books and ghostwriting, drawing on my training and experience in journalism, including an MA in Journalism. I bring the same qualities to legacy work that have guided me throughout my career: careful listening, curiosity, precision, discretion, and a genuine interest in the person behind the story.

People sometimes tell me things in an interview that they didn’t expect to say. One legacy authorship client, halfway through an interview, laughed and said, “This is like talking to my therapist!”

Ultimately, I want the people I work with to have the peace of mind of knowing that their stories, experiences, and wisdom are safely in words, and will be there for the people they want to leave them to.
